Tenterfield Youth & Community Growing Circle - Dharnbarran Garden

ACTIVE.  Youth, Family & Community Growing Circle

This Landcare group is supported by NSW Botanical Gardens -Community Greening Program, Tenterfield TAFE and Tenterfield Challenge Community. Still young, the group began 3 years ago, with a particular focus on engaging and empowering vulnerable and disadvantaged people in our communities, such as those living with disabilities; and/ or in public or social housing, who otherwise might have barriers to engagement. Three of our feature programs and activities are detailed below:

The Community Garden Course focuses on building skill sets for local mentors in gardening. The Community Garden Course is offered online by NSW TAFE and in partnership with the NSW Botanical Gardens Community Greening Program. This course has been a great way to connect with other community gardeners, learning from and sharing with a spectrum of growers across the state, from the rooftop gardens in urban Sydney to the arid bush environment of Wilcannia. We benefit from peer learning and sharing knowledge, improving climate adaptability, discovering what’s happening in different areas. In addition to strengthening local connections, participants have developed long distance friendships as a result. While the weekly course series has wrapped up, those Thursday TEAMS sessions with Community Greening will likely continue in the future, but in a different format.

The Growing Circle is an informal exchange network. The group share and swap seeds, plants, produce, worms and surplus to foster food security and resilience in our local community.
