Winter - Time to plan tussock treatments

17th August 2026

Winter is an important time for landholders to check pastures for serrated tussock and other invasive grasses and plan control before plants flower and produce seed in spring and summer.

A mature, serrated tussock plant can produce up to 120,000 seeds, making early identification and treatment particularly important. Landholders are encouraged to map infestations, organise herbicide, equipment or contractors and plan follow-up monitoring.

Small or isolated infestations should be treated early, with longer-term management combining appropriate control methods with maintaining healthy, dense pastures.
