Welcome to the ...

Granite Borders Landcare Committee ... Web site.

This website is an ongoing work in progress, resting upon the time, effort and passion of the many community members involved.

What's news?

  • Granite Borders Landcare Celebrating Landcare Week 2010

Granite Borders Landcare is celebrating its steady achievements over the years with a social dinner at the Barrelroom at Ballandean Estate on Friday September 10th 2010. They will also be holding a street stall in Tenterfield, September 11th and a social “Picnic in the Park” at Tenterfield Park, September 12th.

Over the 15 years of its existence the Committee has many achievements in sustainable agriculture, natural resource management and community engagement, which have led to the strength the organisation enjoys today. Recently the Committee added its 1000th contact to their mailing list, and has signed on its 30th member group, demonstrating the increasing capacity of the community and individuals.

Landcare groups can be formed addressing particular interests, such as organics or protecting biodiversity, controlling a specific weed or learning about grazing management. Landholders can form groups to discuss issues with natural resource management (such as native vegetation, water, erosion and weeds) in a social, relaxed environment. This is a great advantage as landholders grapple with the many changes and increased levels of regulation in land management.

Granite Borders Landcare is a cross-border group, with member groups based in both Tenterfield and Stanthorpe.

Granite Borders Landcare is an umbrella network which provides insurance, incorporation and coordination services to these groups, to assist with running events, accessing funding grants and cutting down on complicated paperwork!

The committee continues to work tirelessly to turn project ideas into reality. For more information about Landcare in the local area, including forming a new group, please contact Granite Borders Landcare Committee on (02) 6736 3500 or email landcare@halenet.com.au.

Border-Rivers Gwydir Invasive Species Planning

A series of workshops are planned on Invasive species (weed and pest animals) issues in the Tenterfield and surrounding areas, including feral animal control and love grass management. These are part of a larger catchment-wide planning process, gathering landholder feedback for the identification and prioritisation of invasive species. These should run during September and October. Stay tuned for further information.

Finding Landcare's Champions!

The peak body for Landcare in the North of the State, the New England North West Network Chairs has decided the local ‘Landcare Champions’ for the Landcare and Border Rivers-Gwydir CMA Regional Awards.

Tenterfield Shire Council has been named as the "Local Council Landcare Champion" for 2009. This award recognises 13 years of fantastic support from TSC, providing and looking after our office in Martin Street, Tenterfield. Council has also partnered with Landcare in a number of important weed eradication projects throughout the area. We would like to thank the councillors and staff for their on-going support of Granite Borders Landcare.

Congratulations are also due to the Tenterfield Naturalists, who were named runners-up in the Community Groups and Urban Landcare categories. This is again worthy recognition of a group that has achieved so much. We would like to acknowledge our other nominees, The Border Landcare Organic Group, Rex Maddocks and Jane I'ons, Rob and Cath Wheatley and St Josephs Primary School. Your contributions to Natural Resource Management in our area are invaluable. Keep up the good work.
